Filing your West Virginia state income tax return
When you begin you West Virginia state income tax return, you should file using the same filing status used on your federal income tax return. However, there are times when this is impossible. For instance if you and your spouse reside in different states you may be eligible to file a married filing jointly for your federal return but unable to on your state return.
Since West Virginia doesn't allow a standard deduction or itemized deduction, taxpayers do not have to be concerned with coinciding their state and federal returns in this area.
West Virginia also has very few tax credits, which makes your return easier, but allows you less tax relief.
For one, West Virginia allows you a tax credit for taxes paid to another state. This is the most common of the available tax credits. To claim this credit, file Schedule E. Others credits include:
• Historic Rehabilitated Buildings Credit • Capital Company Credit • Neighborhood Investment Credit • Environmental Agricultural Equipment Credit
As a nonresident of West Virginia with income from a West Virginia source, you are still required to file a West Virginia state income tax return. West Virginia, however, does have reciprocity agreements with bordering states.
This agreement allows residents of some neighboring states to not pay tax on wages earned in West Virginia. Of course, you have to declare your eligibility. Ask your place of employment for more details.
Sidebar You can work on your West Virginia tax return online while filing your federal return (you can work on it for free, and pay nothing until you are ready to file).
