Filing your Virginia state income tax return

The filing status used on your federal return will generally determine thestatus that you use on your state form.

Married filers should keep in mind thatfiling status depends partially on residency status. As a general rule, aresident and a nonresident cannot file a joint or combined Virginia return. Thisis particularly important for members of the military to consider when choosinga filing status.

Likewise, if you itemize your deductions on your federal return you must itemize yourdeductions on the Virginia return also.

Virginia offers about twenty tax credits, but most of them are pretty specific. The more common ones include:

Credit for Taxes Paid to Another StateDay-Care Facility Investment CreditLow Income Housing CreditLow Income Individuals CreditPolitical Contributions CreditPreservation of Land Tax Credit

To claim these credits, you should file Schedule CR. A list of all the credit can be found on the Virginia Department of Revenue website.

In addition to these tax credits, Virginia taxpayers can claim a child and dependent care deduction. For more information on this and the state's itemized and standard deduction, check out the Virginia Department of Revenue website.

In come you receive as pension while a Virginia resident is taxable by Virginia, even though it may have been received from another state. However, you will not be taxed twice.

Even though your pension from another state is taxable in Virginia, it will not be taxed by the other state.

Virginia taxes all sources of income at the same rate range, including capital gains.

Nonresidents report their income in the same manner as residents, but useVirginia Form 763. An allocation percentage, based on the ratio of Virginiasource income to income from all sources, is applied to compute the net Virginiataxable income.
