Filing your Ohio state income tax return

First, Ohio residents are required to use the same filing status on their state income tax return as used on their federal income tax return.

Since Ohio does not offer the option of itmezing your deductions or taking the standard deuction, you do not have to be concerned with coinciding your state and federal return in this area.

Although the standard or itemized deductions are not available in Ohio, there are a variety of tax credits and other deductions you may claim. Some of the more common tax credits offered to Ohio state residents are:

  • retirement income credit
  • senior citizen credit
  • child and dependent care credit
  • Ohio adoption credit

Some of the more common deductions are:

  • tuition expenses to qualified Ohio educational institution
  • medical saving account deduction
  • long term care premium deduction

You can see a complete listing of tax credits and deductions on the Ohio Department of Taxation's website.

Since retirement income is taxable to your state of residency, if you receive retirement income from a source outside of Ohio but are a resident, the income is taxable to Ohio.

Finally, unless you are a resident of a reciprocity state, which are the five state bordering Ohio, then you must file a state tax return no matter how little you made during the year.

Sidebar
You can work on your Ohio tax return online while filing your federal return (you can work on it for free, and pay nothing until you are ready to file), or use tax preparation software that you install on your computer.

Note: if you are filing more than one state return, you must either use the software, or file a paper return for each additional state, as TurboTax for The Web only allows one state prep.
