Filing your Montana state income tax return

When you file your Montana state tax return, the filing status you used in your federal return is most often also used on your state return. However, if you and your spouse are residents of different states, you cannot both file on the same Montana state tax return, meaning if you are not allowed to use the Married Filing Jointly filing status.

Montana's allowable tax deductions are quite similar to the tax deductions listed on your federal return.Montana offers numerous tax credits and deductions. Make sure you're eligible for each before claiming them. To itemize your deductions or obtain a complete list of the available deductions, consult Form 2A.

Page two of Form 2A lists all possible Montana tax credits. The most common tax credits are:

  • Qualified Endowment Credit
  • College Contribution Credit
  • Dependent Care Assistance Credit
  • Recycling Credit
  • Elderly Care Credit

You can access a full list of tax credits with eligibility requirements on the Montana tax website.

Finally, Montana residents are taxed on all income, regardless of its source. This means that part-year residents and nonresidents are taxed on all income from a Montana source. It also means that as a resident of Montana, your retirement income is taxed, regardless of whether it is from a different state.
