Filing your Missouri state income tax return

First of all, your Missouri state income tax return must use the same filing status as used on your federal income tax return.

Similarly, you are required to report the same deduction on the Missouri income tax return as on the federal tax return. Therefore, if you claim an itemize deduction of 12,555 you must use this figure at the beginning of Form MO-A to itemize your deductions on the Missouri return--if you claim a standard deduction on the federal return you will have to do the same on the Missouri return

Missouri allows a variety of tax credits to be claimed on the state income tax return. The credits vary quite a bit and are rather particular. However, they are numerous. In fact there are 44 tax credits for the 2006 tax season. You can find a list of each on the Missouri Department of Revenue website.

There are various tax deductions allowed on the Missouri income tax return. Once again you should consult the website for an entire list of deductions. Some of the more common ones include the federal tax deduction, itemized/standard deduction, pension exemption, and dependent deduction.

Since pensions and annuities are taxable to the state o residency, you must pay Missouri state taxes on any income received from pensions and annuities even if they are from a different state.

However, you may be eligible to claim an exemption of up to $6,000 in pension income. Complete part 3 of your state income tax return to find out if you qualify fro the exemption or how much you can claim.

The Missouri individual income tax return begins with your claimed federal adjusted gross income and, since your capital gains and losses are included in this figure, they are taxed at the same rate as the rest of your income.

Finally, if you did not reside in the state of Missouri for more than 30 days during the tax year, you are considered a nonresident. Nonresidents are required to file if they had a federal adjusted gross income of over $600.00.

Sidebar
You can work on your Missouri tax return online while filing your federal return (you can work on it for free, and pay nothing until you are ready to file).

Note: if you are filing more than one state return, you must file a paper return for each additional state, as TurboTax for The Web only allows one state prep.
