Filing your Maine state income tax returnIf you qualify for two filing statuses, you are allowed, under Maine tax laws, to use a different filing status on your state income tax return than you used on your federal income tax return.
If you itemize your deductions on your federal tax return, you can still use the standard deduction on your state income tax return.
Maine grants numerous tax credits. A complete list of credits allowed on the Maine return are listed on Schedule A.

Retirement benefits from another state are taxed in Maine. However, you can claim a tax credit for taxes paid to another state in case these benefits are taxed twice. You must file the Maine long form in order to claim a credit for taxes paid to another jurisdiction on Maine Schedule 3.
Anyone who is not a resident of Maine, but who earns more than $6,000 in gross income from Maine sources and spent more than 20 days in Maine during the tax year, must file a Maine return to determine any tax liability that may be due.
