Note: An additional $850 is claimed for the standard deduction for individuals over 65 and/or blind.
* The numbers are for single individuals. For joint returns, the taxes are twice the tax imposed on half the income. Filing your Kansas state income tax returnThe filing status on your Kansas return must be the same as on your federal return. This rule holds true with only one exception. The filing status of qualifying widow(er) with a dependent child, is switched to head of household for the state return.
As a resident, you must report all of your income, regardless of where it is earned, on your Kansas state income tax return. If you have earned income from another state, you are eligible to claim a credit for taxes paid to another state.
According to Kansas tax laws, railroad retirement benefits and supplemental annuities are not taxed. However, you must still list these benefits on both your federal and state income tax returns.
In order to itemize your deductions of your Kansas state income tax return you must have itemized on your federal income tax return.
Kansas offers its residents tax relief in the form of a:
• child care credit, • adoption credit, • credit for taxes paid to another state, • earned income credit, to name a few.
Nonresidents cannot claim the Kansas credit for child and dependent care expenses nor can they claim the earned income credit.
Non residents are required to file a Kansas income tax return if the source of any earned income is located in Kansas. Nonresident Kansas wage earners should file a as a nonresident and complete Schedule S, Part B.
