Filing your Georgia state income tax return
First, you must use the same filing status on your Georgia state tax return as you used on your federal return. However, if you filed a joint return with a nonresident, who has no Georgia source of income, you may file a separate return.
A full year resident Georgia is taxed on all sources of income regardless of where the income is derived. This means that your retirement benefits from another state needs to be reported on your return and taxed appropriately.
However, Georgia allows a state tax credit for income taxes paid to states other than Georgia so you wont be taxed twice.
Also, a retirement exclusion has increased for tax years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2003, and prior to Jan. 1, 2003, to $14,500. For tax years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2003, the retirement exclusion increases to $15,000.
Georgia allows its taxpayers to deduct employee business expenses and depreciation. For more information on these, either consult Georgia Department of Revenue or read the requirements listed on the respective tax forms below.
Nonresidents who work in Georgia or receive income from Georgia sources are required to file a Georgia income tax return if they must file a federal tax return.
