Turbo Tax State is the companion state tax preparation software to the consumer line of Intuit's Turbo Tax products. It does for your state income tax return what Turbo Tax Deluxe (for example) does for your federal taxes.
Do you need this extra software?
If you live in one of states that collect personal income tax, than yes. And since it's free with the purchase of the federal version, there is really no harm in getting it.
Although many state returns are simpler than federal ones, it is still a good idea to use custom-designed software to file these returns, seen as mistakes can be just as expensive as ones made on IRS returns. And you can't beat the price. (Free)
